Society for the Philosophical Study of Marxism
a philosophical organization, founded in 1962
Welcome to the Society for the Philosophical Study of Marxism website. We hope to develop this site as a resource for those who are working in areas of philosophical study connected to the works of Karl Marx and the rich tradition(s) of important social, economic, and political theory associated with them. The Society was founded in 1962 by John Somerville and Howard Parsons with the intention of bringing Marxists together to discuss the broad range of ideas and projects that Marxism informs and which should inform a Marxist program for social change and reconstruction. Against the factionalism that has often been a hindrance to the development and implementation of Marxist ideas, the Society today exists to support and sponsor a range of discussions about and within Marxism as well as between Marxism and other vital and important discussions bearing upon social change and the reconstruction of social relations based on human priorities.
